This is a 19th-century handcrafted Islamic-style carnelian engraved signet ring from Balochistan, Pakistan.
The ring is substantial and imposing, suitable for men:
The maximum inner diameter is approximately 2.5cm, with a wide and thick band. It was hand-forged in its early years, and the band walls still bear traces of original filing and polishing.
The ring face is oval, with the agate face measuring 2.3cm x 1.5cm, full and wide, visually prominent, a classic large-faced shape for West Asian signet rings.
The brass base is cast in one piece, with an open back setting for the agate, allowing the gemstone to be removed separately, conforming to the practical structure of traditional 19th-century South Asian signet rings.
The ring setting employs the traditional Pakistani lost-wax casting technique, a complex and exquisite craftsmanship: The shoulder is decorated in layers, with the bottom layer covered in a fine caviar-like pattern, and the upper layer featuring auspicious vine and scrolling floral designs in relief. A teardrop-shaped openwork border surrounds the edge, creating a strong sense of depth. The ring body is covered with a naturally aged oxide layer, and the inner wall shows the greenish-blue patina formed over many years. There are no signs of artificial chemical aging; the wear and corrosion are even and soft, naturally and authentically reflecting a century of circulation and wear. The main stone is natural carnelian (red agate), with a clear and even texture, and a warm, restrained orange-red hue—a material traditionally used for seals in South and West Asia for millennia.
The stone surface is carved using the traditional intaglio technique, with a set of Islamic auspicious symbols hand-carved: the palm fan-shaped pattern at the top symbolizes vitality and prosperity, the scroll-shaped pattern in the middle represents academic success, and the pottery jar and wheat ear pattern at the bottom symbolizes a bountiful harvest; the entire process avoids human figures and adheres to the tradition of Islamic iconography. The lines are hand-carved with natural depth and the imprint is clear and complete. In ancient times, it could be pressed with wax and used as a seal for private documents and tokens for merchants and commoners.
