Its body was styled by the Italian industrial designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, giving it clean lines and a distinctive black finish. It offers aperture-priority automatic exposure using an electronically-timed Seiko shutter, with mechanical M90 and B settings as a battery-free backup. Film shooters value it as a lightweight, easy-to-use gateway into the Nikon F system, and its Ai-coupled F mount accepts a wide range of manual-focus Nikkor lenses that also adapt readily to mirrorless cameras.
