Ancient Chinese, Tang Dynasty Terracotta 一对宏伟的唐代骑马陪葬侍从陶俑 - 41 cm

China, Tang dynasty (618–907) Heights: 40 cm and 41 cm A rare and impressive pair of large Tang dynasty earthenware equestrian figures, each depicting a mounted rider seated upright on a robust horse. The figures are powerfully modelled, with compact, volumetric bodies and a commanding frontal presence, characteristic of high-quality Tang funerary sculpture. The riders are dressed in long, flowing robes richly coated in iron-red pigment, now attractively worn and softened by burial. Their distinctive soft caps fall down the back of the head, framing faces of striking individuality. The hands are positioned forward, originally intended to hold reins, reinforcing the sense of controlled movement and authority. The horses are sensitively rendered with gently arched necks, alert expressions, and firmly planted legs, standing on integral rectangular bases. Substantial traces of original cream slip and red pigment remain, enhanced by a fine network of mineral deposits and natural encrustation accumulated over centuries. These figures belong to the tradition of mingqi—funerary sculptures created to accompany the elite into the afterlife. During the Tang dynasty, such tomb retinues reflected not only rank and wealth but also the cosmopolitan nature of the empire. Particularly notable are the riders’ strongly modelled faces, with pronounced features and stern, introspective expressions. This physiognomy is widely associated with representations of foreign or Central Asian attendants, a testament to the Tang dynasty’s deep engagement with the Silk Road and its diverse cultural influences. While not formal lokapala guardians, the figures project a quiet authority and vigilance, fulfilling a symbolic protective role within the tomb environment. Condition Overall in very good condition for the period, with expected wear including pigment loss, surface weathering, and minor abrasions. One figure with a very small chip (approx. 2 mm) to the tip of the tail; otherwise remarkably well preserved. The surviving polychromy and burial patina greatly enhance their authenticity and visual appeal. Provenance Private European collection, since 1980 Remark Pairs of this scale and quality are increasingly scarce on the market. The combination of strong sculptural modelling, preserved pigment, and expressive “foreign” facial features makes this an especially desirable example within the corpus of Tang dynasty tomb figures. -A certificate of authenticity from Becker Antiques (specialists in Chinese pottery since 1966, Amsterdam) will accompany the piece. -Premium Authenticity Guarantee – Becker Antiques (Established 1966) This is a high-value artwork, selected with the utmost care by Becker Antiques, a gallery founded in 1966 and based in a historic five-storey mansion in Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter.
