Item Description Japanese bronze koro (incense burner) of square, tapering "fukei" form raised on four outward-flaring legs. The lid is surmounted by a finely modelled shishi (mythical lion-dog) figure with flame-like curling mane, seated atop a stepped, pierced finial pierced with heart-shaped (kokoro) vents for the release of incense smoke. Each of the four sides of the body is cast in low relief with a soaring phoenix (hō-ō) set against a diaper ground of geometric key-fret and wave motifs. The two side handles are cast as stylised elephant heads with upturned trunks. One face bears a separately applied gilt-bronze roundel depicting an agehacho (swallowtail butterfly) mon (family crest) against the dark patinated ground, adding a striking gold accent to the otherwise deep chocolate-brown bronze surface. The underside is fitted with a stamped seal mark, now only partially legible. A well-cast, decorative piece typical of Japanese Meiji-era metalwork production, combining classical Chinese-influenced censer form with distinctly Japanese heraldic ornament.
