An impressive pair of early 20th century monumental terracotta Temple Lions, Shi Shi, or Foo Dogs. A rare pair of polychrome lions seated upon a pair of polychrome bases. Depicting a male and female lion, each modelled with open mouths, in a seated position. The male rests a right paw atop an embroidered ball, the 'pearl of wisdom', with his counterpart the female resting her left paw atop her upturned cub. A superb pair, truly magnificent in shape and size. In very good condition for their age, size and type. From a private collection. Both Lions were purchased privately and situated in a garden since 1966. They were purchased in a UK estate sale. Oriental origin, most likely made for the overseas export market.
