Description
A fine Ethiopian silver ear pick, or ear spoon, known in Amharic as kuk mawča.
Objects of this type were small personal grooming implements used for cleaning the ear. They could also be worn as pendants, suspended from a necklace or cord, combining practical function, personal adornment and intimate daily use.
This example is especially appealing for the richness of its decoration. The handle has a square section and is finely ornamented on all sides with raised and incised geometric motifs, including lozenges, dotted borders and linear patterns. The decoration gives the object a refined architectural presence despite its very small size.
At one end, a circular suspension loop allowed the object to be worn or attached. At the other end, the narrow pick extends from the decorated handle. The form is compact, functional and elegant.
The surface shows a beautiful old usage patina, with darker areas in the recesses and rubbed highlights on the raised decoration. These traces emphasize both the age and the tactile quality of the piece.
A charming Ethiopian kuk mawča, appreciated for its miniature scale, finely decorated square handle, old patina and intimate personal function.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, oxidation, rubbing, small marks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
