Weaving occupies an important place in Ethiopian material culture, especially in the production of handwoven cotton textiles. Traditional Ethiopian weaving is commonly associated with horizontal treadle looms, on which the reed or beater plays an essential role in separating the warp threads and compacting the weft during the weaving process. This example is remarkable for its unusually large size. At 117 cm long, it has a strong graphic and architectural presence, much greater than most weaving tools encountered on the market. The object is composed of two long dark wooden side elements holding a dense central field of very fine cane or reed elements. These closely spaced elements form the functional “comb” through which the warp threads would pass. The upper and lower sections are bound with fibre, preserving the original construction and giving the piece a strong ethnographic character. The wood shows a beautiful old patina, with dark brown to black tones, reddish rubbed areas and visible traces of handling. The fibre bindings and fine reed elements are well preserved, making this an especially complete and visually compelling example. Beyond its technical function, the object has a powerful sculptural quality. Its long vertical format, dark patinated wood and dense linear structure give it an almost abstract presence, while remaining deeply rooted in the world of Ethiopian textile production. A rare and impressive Ethiopian weaving tool, appreciated for its large scale, old patina, excellent preservation and strong ethnographic presence. Condition Good condition overall for an object of this type and size, with wear, abrasions, small marks, minor losses and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Fibre bindings preserved.
