It is painted with a bird perched among blossoming branches in warm red and brown tones against a white ground. The box is inscribed “Ko-tsubo” (small jar), and the base bears the artist’s mark. Compact in scale, it is a decorative cabinet piece with a distinctive sculptural form. Artist Profile: Yamada Yoshiaki (b. 1948) is a ceramic artist from Terai, Ishikawa Prefecture. He is known for Kutani ware and iroe decoration. He studied under Yamachika Tsuyoshi in 1974 and also under the late Bukosai Taizan. He is a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association and has received awards at the Kutani new works exhibitions, the Dentō Kutaniyaki Kōgeiten, and the Sōzō exhibitions.
