The whole print looks like embossed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About the print A serene harvest-time view from Tokuriki's most celebrated series: snow-capped Fuji rising behind a rounded green hill, where a lone black ox stands beneath the trees near a small torii gate, while below, farmers work between golden rows of cut grain. The title makes the theme explicit — this is Fuji presiding over a year of plenty, the sacred mountain as guarantor of the land's abundance. Composed in 1939–40, the design carries the quiet optimism and clean, modern flatness that distinguish Tokuriki's homage to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views, made exactly a century after his great predecessor. The Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji is widely regarded as Tokuriki's masterpiece in the shin-hanga manner: designed by the artist and executed by Uchida's professional carvers and printers in Kyoto, showing the mountain across the seasons, at dawn and dusk, from villages, shrines, shores and fields. --------------------------------------------------- About the artist Tokuriki Tomikichirō came from an old Kyoto family of artists and became one of the leading printmakers of twentieth-century Kyoto, active across both the self-carved sōsaku-hanga movement and publisher-led shin-hanga production. He worked until his death in 1999 at ninety-seven, and taught a generation of younger printmakers, including Western students. His Fuji series remains his most sought-after achievement among collectors.
