Antiqued Catholic devotional medal – Saint Anthony of Padua with the Christ Child – 18th Century

Offered is an antique Catholic devotional medal, most likely dating 18th century. The piece appears to be cast in a lead-tin alloy, pewter, or a similar base metal and retains its original suspension loop, showing that it was intended to be worn around the neck, attached to a rosary, or carried as a personal object of faith and protection.

One side depicts Saint Anthony of Padua, identifiable by the Franciscan habit and the figure of the Christ Child held close to him. Saint Anthony was one of the most widely venerated saints in Catholic Europe and was commonly invoked for protection, guidance, safe travel, and the recovery of lost possessions. Devotional medals bearing his image were produced in large numbers for pilgrims and worshippers, although early handmade and cast examples such as this are now increasingly difficult to find.

The surrounding inscription is heavily worn but appears to correspond with the traditional Latin identification of Saint Anthony of Padua, often written as S. ANTONIVS PATAVINVS or in an abbreviated form. The figure is rendered in a distinctly early devotional style, with strong outlines, simplified drapery, and a raised border around the medal.

The opposite side shows a more complex religious scene. A haloed figure appears seated or standing within an architectural setting, while another figure kneels or approaches in devotion. The exact subject is difficult to determine because of the extensive wear, but it may represent a vision, miracle, apparition, or episode from the life of a saint. The architectural details and symbolic composition are typical of European pilgrimage and devotional medals from the Baroque period.

The medal displays substantial age-related wear, oxidation, encrustation, edge irregularities, and surface loss. These features are consistent with prolonged handling, burial, or centuries of devotional use. The original suspension loop remains present, although it also shows wear and deformation. No attempt has been made to clean or restore the piece, and its aged patina has been preserved.

This is not a coin, but a historical religious object made for private devotion. Pieces of this kind provide an interesting connection to everyday Catholic life in early modern Europe, when medals were commonly carried as expressions of faith, protection, pilgrimage, and personal identity.
