This Baule ceremonial mask from the Tiébissou region in central Côte d'Ivoire belongs to the rich tradition of *Mblo* masks, which were used in dance performances, festivals, and formal ceremonies. Unlike fearsome spirit masks, Baule ceremonial masks embody idealized human beauty and social virtues. They honor respected individuals or represent spiritual ideals, achieving their full impact only through the interplay of music, dance, and costumed performance. Incl. stand.
The mask is dominated by an extraordinarily elaborate hairstyle. The hair rises into an elegantly curved arch, clearly separated from the hairline by a decorative band featuring a braided pattern and stud-like ornaments. Three horizontally arranged braids at each temple lend rhythmic structure to the composition and attest to the sculptors' exceptional virtuosity.
The face conveys a profound sense of inner calm. The eyes, reduced to narrow slits, and the slightly downturned corners of the mouth create an expression of concentrated seriousness characteristic of many Baule masks. The finely carved, prominent nose forms the central axis of the face, while stud-like ornaments on the bridge of the nose, temples, and cheekbones evoke traditional scarification patterns, underscoring the refined beauty of the depicted figure. A semi-circular beard brings the vertical composition to a harmonious close, simultaneously signifying maturity and dignity.
The glossy patina and fine surface cracking bear witness to a long history of ritual use, lending the mask its authentic aura as an object of living cultural practice.
