Ivory Powder Flask, 17th century
Circular powder flask carved from ivory and engraved on both sides with concentric bands surrounding a central stylised floral rosette. The surface displays the characteristic natural grain and age cracks of the material.
The flask retains its bronze dispensing mount and suspension cord with tassels. Powder flasks of this type were used to carry and dispense gunpowder for hunting firearms and were often made from ivory or horn, materials valued for both their durability and decorative qualities.
Comparable examples are preserved in museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. no. NG-C-2002-2), on loan from the Legermuseum.
Diameter: 8.8 cm
Height including nozzle: 11.7 cm.
