Title: Japanese Arita Square Sometsuke Vase, Karakusa Scroll Pattern, Kenzan Mark (乾山), with Tomobako Kiln: Arita ware (有田焼), circular underglaze blue private seal mark on base (Kenzan 乾山) Dimensions: H 26cm (10.24in) × W 9.4cm (3.70in) Weight: 781 g Tomobako Box Dimensions: H 29cm (11.42in) × W 11.7cm (4.41in) × D 11.7cm (4.61in) Material: High-temperature white porcelain body Period: Mid-Shōwa Period, approx. 1970–1980 Included: Original paulownia tomobako box (共箱), yellow textile wrapping cloth (袱布) This square underglaze blue (sometsuke 染付) vase is an Arita ware (有田焼) piece stamped with a Kenzan seal mark on its base. Arita ware has been renowned for refined white porcelain and underglaze blue painting craft since the Edo era. The vase is fully hand-painted with scrolling arabesque lotus patterns (唐草紋). The cobalt blue glaze delivers a rich, stable hue with neat, symmetrical patterns across all four sides. Key-fret decorative borders run along the rim and foot, paired with a neat, upright square form. The arabesque floral motif symbolises enduring fortune and longevity, making it perfect for ikebana flower display. A circular underglaze blue Kenzan seal is impressed on the base, matching the handwritten calligraphy on the original paulownia tomobako box. The complete set includes the wooden box and yellow wrapping cloth. Ogata Kenzan (尾形乾山,1663–1743) is one of the founding masters of Edo-period Kyoyaki (京焼), ranked alongside Ninsei and Dōhachi as the three great Kyoto potters. Kenzan ware stands as an independent recognised ceramic category. After the original Ogata Kenzan passed away, later craftsmen carried on using the “Kenzan” seal, split into three branches: authentic Kyoto Kenzan wares, modern reproductions, and tribute Arita wares with Kenzan marks. This Arita vase is a Shōwa-era piece crafted in homage to Kenzan’s iconic style. Minor natural discoloration from long-term storage is present due to age. There are no chips, cracks or restorations on the vase. The original paulownia box bears natural dust and age wear; overall condition is good for its age.
