Item Description
A vertical Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) featuring a finely rendered reproduction painting of a complete suit of samurai armor (gusoku), displayed frontally in the traditional "armor portrait" style. The kabuto helmet is crowned with dramatic golden kuwagata horns and a gilt crescent finial, with lacquered crimson kozane-style lacing on the shoulder guards (sode), chest plate, and thigh guards (haidate), trimmed in black-and-white knotted cord. Beneath the armor, richly patterned textiles are depicted in soft teal, peach, and floral chrysanthemum motifs, paired with a jade-green under-robe decorated with dragon and cloud designs. A bold white-whiskered mempō (facial armor mask) gives the figure a striking, formidable presence.
The painting is signed in the lower right with a signature reading 芳文興 (reading and identity unverified) accompanied by two red seals. The work is mounted as a traditional kakejiku with gold-brocade silk borders, an ivory patterned silk header and footer, and black lacquered roller ends (jikusaki), complete with hanging cord.
