Product Details
The ornament depicts a seated dog with a dignified expression and substantial presence. Its simple yet powerful form highlights the quality of Ryubundo's casting and finishing techniques.
Ryubundo was founded around 1754 in Kyoto and became one of Japan's leading producers of artistic cast works. The workshop gained particular recognition for refining the lost-wax casting technique, which enabled smoother surfaces and more intricate designs than conventional casting methods. While Ryubundo is best known for its cast iron kettles (tetsubin), the workshop also produced decorative cast objects that display the same high level of craftsmanship.
The ornament is accompanied by its original wooden storage box. The box bears handwritten inscriptions and shows tape residue, while the lid is slightly warped and also has writing on the underside, reflecting its age and long-term storage.

Background of the Product
Founded in Kyoto around 1754, Ryubundo became one of Japan's most respected foundries and remained active from the late Edo period into the Shōwa era. The workshop was especially noted for its mastery of lost-wax casting, a technique that allowed exceptionally smooth surfaces and finely detailed forms.
Although Ryubundo is most widely associated with high-quality cast iron kettles, the workshop also produced decorative sculptures and other cast iron works. Today, Ryubundo pieces are appreciated by collectors for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and enduring aesthetic appeal.
