A large and finely decorated Chinese Canton painted enamel vase on copper, dating to the Late Qing Dynasty, Guangxu period (1875–1908). The elegant baluster-shaped body is richly decorated against a vibrant ruby-red ground densely embellished with scrolling floral ornament. Two large shaped reserves enclose beautifully hand-painted scenes of flowering peonies, pierced scholar’s rocks and colourful birds, all executed in brilliant enamel colours. In Chinese culture, these traditional motifs symbolise prosperity, nobility, longevity and harmony. The neck is decorated with continuous floral scrolls beneath a band of stylised ruyi motifs, while the spreading foot features turquoise lotus-petal panels. The rim and foot are mounted with gilt-bronze borders, enhancing both the appearance and durability of the vase. Produced in Canton (Guangzhou), painted enamels of this quality were highly appreciated for their brilliant colours, refined hand-painted decoration and elaborate ornamental designs. With its harmonious proportions, substantial weight and finely executed enamelling, this vase is both an impressive decorative object and a fine example of late Qing Canton enamel craftsmanship.
