Holy Roman Empire – Leopold I – Silver Medal 1685 – Victories over the Turks – Nuremberg A commemorative medal produced in 1685 to celebrate the victories of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I during the campaigns against the Ottoman Empire. This type was produced in Nuremberg and is generally attributed to the medallists Georg Hautsch and Lazarus Gottlieb Lauffer. The obverse depicts the draped, right-facing bust of Emperor Leopold I supported by two putti, with a panoramic view of Vienna below. The obverse inscription reads: LEOPOLDVS I TVRC VICTOR Meaning “Leopold I, Victor over the Turks.” The reverse contains ten oval cartouches depicting the cities and fortresses captured during the campaigns of 1685, including city views, fortress plans and their names. The central inscription reads: VERMEHRER DES REICHS with the date 16–85 below.
