Antique Meerschaum Pipe – Carved Sultan's Head with Turban, in Fitted Case Description A hand-carved meerschaum pipe bowl in the form of a bearded sultan or Ottoman dignitary, wearing a turban with a carved rosette ornament and a finely detailed mail coif draped over the shoulders and neck. The head is turned slightly to the left in three-quarter profile, giving the carving depth and presence. The underside of the bowl carries a small supplementary carved motif — a floral/leaf spray — rather than a maker's stamp. This figural style is characteristic of the 19th-century meerschaum-carving tradition that began in Eskişehir, Turkey, and was subsequently taken up by European workshops, most notably in Vienna, where such bowls were commonly fitted with amber or amber-substitute stems, as seen here.
