The wine wafts from the glass with aromas of blueberry coulis, licorice, dried thyme, slate and vine smoke. The bright acids keep the wine's plushy, dark-natured flavors in check, while the firm but refined tannins provide a sturdy backbone. It opens up gracefully on the mid-palate, revealing small pangs of salinity that, in combination with the tannins, draw out the wine and make for a precise, elemental finish. This is a wine to sit with for a while, beautifully done.
