Antique Japanese Satsuma Koro — Signed Koseki — Elephant Handles & Reticulated Lid — Meiji Period — Tomobako A fine antique Japanese Satsuma-ware incense burner (koro) by Meiji-era ceramic artist Sakashita Koseki (坂下光石), complete with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako). The Piece The tripod body rests on three sculptural elephant-head feet and is fitted with two elephant-head handles — a prized decorative motif in Meiji export Satsuma. The body is decorated in polychrome enamels and gold with chrysanthemums and autumn grasses on the characteristic pale cream crackle-glaze ground. The domed reticulated lid features fine pierced latticework with a gilt Greek key border — a technically demanding element indicative of high-quality workshop production. The shoulder displays elaborate geometric brocade patterns in red, green, and gold, visible when the lid is removed. Signature & Provenance The base is signed in red enamel: 産摩 光石邨 (Satsuma / Koseki). The tomobako is inscribed 薩摩 香爐 光石作 — confirming authorship. The box also bears a red seal stamp. Condition Good antique condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs to the ceramic body or lid. Minor surface patina consistent with age. Interior shows light use marks normal for a piece of this period.
