An exceptional wearable relic fashioned from an authentic medieval Armenian silver coin issued during the reign of King Hetoum I (1226–1270), one of the most celebrated rulers of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia and one of the principal Christian monarchs of the Crusader world.
The obverse features the majestic lion of Cilicia, the enduring royal emblem of the Armenian kingdom. More than a heraldic beast, the lion embodied courage, sovereignty, divine protection, and unwavering faith. It proclaimed the authority of a kingdom that stood as a vital Christian stronghold between Byzantium, the Islamic world, and the Latin Crusader States. Even after centuries, the powerful symbolism of the lion remains immediately recognizable.
The reverse bears the characteristic Armenian cross surrounded by elegant medieval inscriptions, reflecting the kingdom's profound Christian identity. Throughout the reign of Hetoum I, the cross represented not only devotion but also the unity of throne and Church during an era when Armenia served as a bridge between East and West. The coin was struck at a time when Cilician Armenia enjoyed flourishing trade, diplomatic alliances with European Crusaders, and historic contacts with the Mongol Empire in its effort to preserve Christianity in the Near East.
King Hetoum I ranks among the most remarkable medieval rulers. His diplomatic journeys, military campaigns, and alliances allowed the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia to prosper for decades despite being surrounded by powerful rivals. His coinage became a symbol of stability, royal legitimacy, and the resilience of one of medieval Christianity's most enduring kingdoms.
This authentic medieval silver coin has been carefully transformed into an elegant pendant using a discreet silver suspension ring, preserving both sides fully visible while allowing it to be worn as a unique historical jewel. The conversion respects the integrity and artistic character of the original coin, creating a remarkable fusion of history and craftsmanship.
More than jewellery, this pendant is a tangible witness to the age of the Crusades—an artifact connecting its wearer with medieval Armenia, the Holy Land, and the heroic struggle to preserve one of the world's oldest Christian kingdoms.
Condition: Excellent ancient condition with attractive medieval toning and age-related wear. Fine details of the lion, cross, and inscriptions remain visible. Professionally mounted as a pendant while preserving the historic character and collectability of the original coin.
An outstanding piece for collectors of medieval coinage, Crusader history, Armenian heritage, historical jewellery, and wearable antiquities.
