Halite, or rock salt, forms from evaporated salty water in places like the Great Salt Lake and its surrounding Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, a classic example of an old salt lake system where halite crystallizes from brine, often forming cubic crystals or pink crusts due to bacteria. These deposits are remnants of ancient, much larger bodies of water, like the prehistoric Lake Bonneville, leaving vast salt pans where halite accumulates, as seen in the Great Salt Lake Desert as well.
