Complete Writing Set with Original Wooden Storage Box (Tomobako)
Late Meiji – Early Taisho Period (circa 1900–1920)
Overview
This elegant Japanese suzuribako (writing box) was produced during the late Meiji to early Taisho period, when traditional lacquer craftsmanship reached a remarkable level of refinement.
The entire surface is finished in beautiful nashiji lacquer, a sophisticated technique in which countless fine gold flakes are dispersed beneath transparent layers of lacquer, creating a deep and shimmering appearance. This labor-intensive finish was reserved for higher-quality works and remains one of the most admired techniques in Japanese lacquer art.
Design
The exterior is decorated with a graceful crane rendered in delicate gold maki-e, accompanied by natural foliage and rocks. Rather than relying on elaborate ornamentation, the composition emphasizes balance, elegance, and generous negative space, expressing the refined aesthetic that characterizes high-quality Meiji lacquerware.
The interior is also finished in matching nashiji lacquer and retains its original writing implements, creating a harmonious and complete presentation.
Craftsmanship
This writing box demonstrates the restrained elegance for which Meiji-period lacquerware is highly regarded. The carefully applied gold maki-e, evenly finished nashiji ground, and balanced proportions reflect the skill of experienced craftsmen.
Unlike later decorative pieces made primarily for export, this suzuribako was created as a practical object for refined daily use while maintaining exceptional artistic quality.
