A stone stele depicting Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩 standing in quiet meditation, carved in relief from granite.
The compassionate bodhisattva is portrayed in the form of a humble monk, standing before a pointed mandorla-shaped halo. His hands are clasped before the chest, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel nyoihôju 如意宝珠.
The sculpture has acquired an attractive weathered surface with naturally developed lichen, reflecting many years of outdoor exposure.
Period: Japan, Shôwa period (1926–1989).
Dimensions: Height: 45 cm; Width: 19.5 cm; Depth: 12.5 cm.
The sculpture is in very good condition, with wear consistent with long-term outdoor exposure and a naturally developed lichen patina. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩, affectionately known as Ojizô-sama お地蔵様, is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese Buddhism. Revered as the protector of children, travellers, and those in need, he is especially associated with guiding the souls of deceased children and offering comfort to the departed. His image is commonly found along roadsides, in temple precincts, and in cemeteries throughout Japan, where he serves as a symbol of compassion and protection.
