Description
This bronze ring represents a well-preserved example of Roman personal jewellery dating to the 1st–3rd century AD. Its slender hoop, small proportions and elongated oval bezel correspond closely with female ring types documented throughout the Imperial period.
The bezel preserves a stylised composition of two lions arranged back-to-back in low relief. In Roman iconography, paired lions symbolised Virtus, strength, vigilance, authority and noble dignity. Symmetrical animal compositions were frequently employed in Roman decorative arts to express balance, protection and continuity, while the lion itself remained one of the Empire's most enduring emblems of power and prestige.
Considering the typology of the ring, the paired lion motif may be understood not merely as an ornamental design but as a symbolic expression of status, family identity and enduring protection. Comparable heraldic-style animal arrangements appear throughout Roman glyptic art and jewellery, where mirrored compositions conveyed stability, harmony and the lasting prestige of aristocratic households.
The ring retains an exceptional archaeological surface with stable ancient patination and authentic mineral deposits. The remarkable preservation of the bezel allows the paired lion composition to remain clearly legible, a feature becoming increasingly uncommon among surviving Roman bronze rings and one that substantially enhances both its historical significance and collector value.
Combining elegant female typology, refined Roman craftsmanship and enduring aristocratic symbolism, this ring constitutes a highly desirable example of Roman Imperial jewellery and an outstanding acquisition for collectors of authentic ancient personal ornaments.
