antique Japanese Nanbu Tekki Cast Iron Mosquito Coil Holder — Ox with Flute-Playing Boy
A charming and finely detailed piece of Japanese Nanbu Tekki cast ironwork, depicting a standing ox led by a nose ring and rope, with a young boy seated on its back playing a bamboo flute (fue). Behind the boy is a small lantern-shaped basket pierced with decorative holes, designed to hold and safely diffuse the smoke of a burning mosquito coil (katori-senko) — a classic summer household object once common in Japanese homes.
The piece is a wonderful example of Meiji-to-early-Showa era decorative folk craft: functional, sculptural, and full of pastoral charm. The subject — a herding boy playing music atop an ox — is a well-loved motif in East Asian decorative art, symbolizing rural tranquility and childhood innocence.
Cast in heavy iron with a rich, dark patina and scattered traces of natural rust bloom consistent with age, the piece has excellent presence and would make an eye-catching addition to any collection of Japanese metalwork, folk art, or unusual smoking/incense accessories.
