An attractive wooden chôba’dansu 帳場箪笥 (merchant’s document cabinet) fitted with iron hardware, fully restored, cleaned, and waxed. This cabinet front is crafted from sturdy precious Keyaki burlwood (Zelkova – "Japanese oak"), showcasing its striking natural grain through a dark brown lacquer finish with a lovely sheen. The frame is crafted from hinoki (cypress) wood, finished in a matching warm hue. It is designed with nine drawers of varying sizes, a pair of sliding doors adorned with decorative rectangular thumb grips embossed with a phoenix 鳳凰 (hô’ô) motif, and a hinged door that opens to reveal two additional drawers. The drawers feature large circular lock plates and sturdy iron ‘warabite’-shaped bail handles. The sides are fitted with iron retractable n-shaped pole-carrying handles, making the cabinet easy to transport. Period: Japan – Second half 19th century (Early Meiji period). Dimensions: Height 90.5 cm, Width 87.7 cm, Depth 40.2 cm. The chôba’dansu is in very good restored condition with no keys included. The hinged door warped, but functional.
