Item Description This charming antique Japanese bronze incense burner (kōro) is cast in the form of a traditional thatched-roof farmhouse (kominka). It is a piece of Sado copperware (Sado dōki), signed by the metalworker Shindō Shinzan 真藤真山 (Sado, dates unknown). The lidded roof lifts away to reveal a hollow interior for burning incense, with smoke escaping through the finely modelled triangular vent at the roof's peak. The surface is richly textured to imitate a thatched straw roof, complete with bundled ridge detailing, while one corner of the eaves is draped with a cast ivy vine climbing toward a circular lattice window. A sliding-door motif with a grid pattern (shoji-style) is rendered on the front facade, and the piece stands on four short cylindrical feet. The maker's seal is impressed on the rear panel. The bronze has developed a deep, even dark brown patina consistent with age and handling — a wonderfully sculptural example of Japanese metalworking craft.
