Item Description
Antique Japanese Bronze Bull Figurine – Patinated Charging Ox Sculpture, Symbol of Prosperity & Good Fortune, Paperweight / Brush Rest
A charmingly rustic small bronze figure of a charging bull (ox), cast with a lowered head, curved horns, an open mouth, and a raised, curled tail. The animal is depicted mid-stride on four sturdy hoofed legs, with incised lines rendered along the neck and shoulder to suggest a mane or dewlap, and swirling relief decoration on the flanks. The surface displays an attractive aged, mottled dark-green and brown patina typical of old bronze, with scattered spots of exposed reddish copper showing through at the high points (horns, back, and hooves) from handling over time.
In East Asian tradition, the ox or bull is regarded as a symbol of strength, diligence, and steady accumulation of wealth, and figures of a charging bull are widely kept as auspicious talismans for good fortune and business prosperity — much in the same spirit as the famous "Charging Bull" of Wall Street, associated with a rising, bullish market. Small bronze animal figures such as this were also traditionally used in the Japanese scholar's or tea-ceremony study as a bunchin (文鎮, paperweight) or brush rest, placed on a desk to hold calligraphy paper or brushes in place. The vigorous, almost sculptural pose of this charging bull gives it presence well beyond its compact size, making it an appealing piece both for lovers of Asian metalwork and for anyone drawn to its symbolism of prosperity and good luck.
