These headgears are not mere accessories, but symbols of prestige, authority, and social rank within the Kuba hierarchy. They are traditionally worn at important ceremonies and events by kings, tribal chiefs, nobles, or council elders. The basic structure is hand-woven from raffia palm fibers, then covered in textiles and laboriously decorated with colored glass beads and cowrie shells.
