Item Description Takaoka Copperware Vase with Gold and Silver Butterfly Inlay by Hoūn This vase is a fine example of Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器), the traditional metal-casting craft of Toyama Prefecture, by the artist Hoūn (峰雲). The entire surface is finished in a deep green base with gold accents throughout, over which two butterflies in gold and silver are rendered in fine metal inlay (zōgan). Depending on the angle and the light, the surface shifts between rich green tones and glowing gold, offering a new discovery with every viewing. In Japan, a pair of facing butterflies, known as "mukai-chō," is a traditional auspicious motif long associated with marital harmony and prosperity. The butterfly itself is also considered a symbol of good fortune, representing immortality and rebirth through its transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to its final, beautiful form. Standing 22 cm tall with a substantial presence, the vase brings quiet, refined beauty to any space, whether displaying flowers or standing alone as a decorative accent. Size Height: 22 cm Diameter: 11 cm Mouth Diameter: 2 cm Weight: 975 g Include Paper presentation box. As a long-stored item, it shows minor wear and soiling. Condition The vase is in near-mint condition. As a long-stored item, it shows minor wear and soiling. Artist Profile Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) is a traditional Japanese metalcasting craft centered in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, with a history of over 400 years. It began in 1611, when the local feudal lord Maeda Toshinaga invited seven master casters to the town to stimulate its industry; production first centered on iron farm tools before expanding into copper and bronze goods. Takaoka became Japan's leading center for cast metalwork, producing everything from temple bells and Buddhist altar fittings to vases, incense burners, and large outdoor bronze statues. The craft is distinguished by its division-of-labor system, in which specialists handle mold-making, casting, engraving, and surface coloring as separate stages, and by its mastery of patination, in which artisans chemically develop the surface color and texture of the metal as the final and defining step of the work. Takaoka Copperware gained international recognition after being exhibited at the Vienna, London, and Paris world expositions during the Meiji era, and in 1975 the region was designated Japan's first officially certified traditional craft-producing area. NOTICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by DHL or Japan Post. It takes about 2-3 weeks to receive normally.
