This is an elegant Japanese Isho-Tansu (clothing cabinet) dating from the mid-20th
century (Showa period). Crafted predominantly from Paulownia wood (Kiri), renowned in
[Design & Hardware]
Unlike the heavily ornamented iron-bound tansu of the Edo or Meiji eras, this piece
reflects the refined minimalism of the mid-Showa era. It features a spacious upper
section with double doors (kanon-biraki) opening to interior trays, and two deep
drawers below. The sleek, rectangular brass handles and latches showcase a beautiful
aged patina, offering a subtle Art Deco or Mid-Century Modern aesthetic that
seamlessly bridges traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary Western
interiors.
[Condition Report - Crucial for Buyers]
This piece is offered in its original, deeply weathered vintage condition, showing
clear signs of age, long-term storage, and historical use across all surfaces. These
characteristics serve as vital indicators of authenticity and its long journey
- Top Surface: Displays several prominent, circular and irregular water/liquid stains
along with naturally dark splotches. A distinct, dark marker is present on the wood grain,
likely an old inventory or storage identifier.
- Front Facade: The natural Paulownia wood surfaces exhibit a beautiful, authentic
weathered silver-grey and beige tone with micro-scuffs and light surface marks.
- Hardware: The brass handles and lock plates retain a deep, uneven oxidized patina
and minor surface pitting.
The cabinet remains structurally sound and functionally intact. It is a highly
expressive, distressed piece that perfectly embodies the Japanese concept of Wabi-
Sabi. Please inspect all detailed images carefully to fully appreciate its unique,
aged patina and worn character before bidding.
