Item Description
Takaoka Bronze Twin-Handled Vase with Archaic Bronze-Style Relief

This Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) vase rises from a rounded body through a paneled, faceted neck to a trumpet-shaped flared mouth. Two handles in the form of stylized mythical beast heads flank the neck, their bared fangs, raised brows, and curling horns rendered in fine cast detail.

The body is covered edge to edge with a dense relief evoking the taotie and thunder-pattern (雷文・饕餮文) motifs of archaic Chinese ritual bronzes, its sweeping, interlocking forms giving the surface real sculptural depth. The crispness of the carving reflects the precision casting for which Takaoka Copperware is known.

The vase carries a deep, greenish-black tone throughout, and the shadows cast within the relief's recesses heighten the sense of dimension and weight in the design.

With its archaic-inspired motifs and commanding presence, the piece works equally well as a flower vessel or as a striking sculptural object in its own right.

Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) is a traditional craft of Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, dating to 1611, when the local feudal lord Maeda Toshinaga invited seven foundry masters to the castle town to develop its metalworking industry. It was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1975.
