Ole N. Ruud – Norwegian Serving Trolley / Bar Cart – Gjøvik – circa 1940s–1950s

Original Norwegian two-tier serving trolley produced by Ole N. Ruud in Gjøvik, Norway.
The trolley is distinguished by its sculptural barley-twist supports, warm honey-coloured wooden finish, two generously sized serving tiers and four original-style metal castors with rubber rims.
The raised edges around both tiers make it practical for serving drinks, bottles or tableware.

The original manufacturer’s label reading “Ole N. Ruud – Gjøvik” remains attached beneath the upper tier, confirming its Norwegian origin and manufacturer.

Ole N. Ruud belonged to an established Norwegian furniture-manufacturing family and operated furniture factories in Oslo, Gjøvik and Odense in Denmark. His workshops also supplied furniture and interiors to the Norwegian America Line.

The combination of traditional barley-twist turning and the restrained, functional two-tier construction places the trolley within the transition between Norwegian interwar furniture and post-war Scandinavian domestic design. A closely related Ole N. Ruud trolley has been described by a member of the Ruud family as having been designed by Ole N. Ruud and produced before 1950; however, the precise model and production date of the present example have not been independently documented.

A highly decorative and functional piece suitable as a serving trolley, drinks cart, tea trolley, side table or mobile display stand.

Condition
The trolley remains in good and attractive original vintage condition.
The construction is solid and stable, and all four castors are present.
The original finish, manufacturer’s label and structural details have been retained.
There are age-appropriate signs of use, including surface scratches, small marks, areas of finish wear and minor variations in colour. The lower tier shows somewhat more visible wear than the upper tier. The wooden sections immediately above the castors display normal abrasion from use.

The object has not been refinished or heavily restored. Its original surface and vintage character have been preserved.

Historical context
Ole N. Ruud established his first furniture factory in Oslo in 1907 and was later associated with furniture production in Gjøvik and Odense, Denmark.
The Ruud workshops formed part of an important Norwegian furniture-making environment, and supplied furniture and interior fittings to the Norwegian America Line.

The preserved label makes this a documented Norwegian production object rather than an unattributed generic serving trolley.
