Description
This remarkable Medieval pendant is distinguished by an exceptionally unusual cinquefoil composition formed by five rounded petals radiating from the centre. Departing from conventional four-armed crosses, this rare design unites the visual traditions of the floral rosette and the Christian cross within a single balanced form.

In Medieval Christian iconography, arrangements of five were associated with the Quinque Vulnera Christi—the Five Holy Wounds of Christ. The pendant’s five petals may symbolically evoke the wounds inflicted upon Christ’s two hands, two feet and side during the Crucifixion. The object may therefore be interpreted not merely as decorative jewellery, but as a personal devotional emblem expressing fides (faith), Passio Christi (the Passion of Christ), salus (salvation) and divine protection.

The substantial integral suspension loop indicates that the object was intended to be worn close to the body as a pendant. Probably cast from a bronze-based copper alloy, it preserves an evocative archaeological surface with dark brown, blackish, reddish and locally green mineralisation. Signs of wear and irregularities across the surface further enhance its historical character.

With its five-petalled radial form, compelling Christian symbolism and well-preserved original suspension loop, this piece represents a highly distinctive and rarely encountered example that stands apart from conventional Medieval cross pendants.
