Description
This remarkable bronze ring represents a highly distinctive example of Medieval Crusader-era jewellery, combining personal devotion, protective belief and the use of coloured stones. Dating approximately to the 11th–13th century AD, the piece displays a symbolic seven-stone composition formed by a large domed central inlay surrounded by six smaller settings. The six surrounding stones have not survived, while the impressive green central inlay remains preserved.

The central inlay may consist of green glass paste, commonly employed in Medieval jewellery to imitate precious stones, although malachite, green chalcedony or chrysoprase are also possible. Its intense colour and domed form give the ring not only a decorative character but also an apotropaic quality—one intended to protect its wearer from harmful forces.

Within Christian numerology, seven was regarded as the numerus perfectionis, the number of divine perfection and sacred completeness. The ring’s seven-stone arrangement may be associated with the Septem Dona Spiritus Sancti—the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Septem Virtutes—the Seven Virtues, the Seven Days of Creation and the Septem Ecclesiae—the Seven Churches described in the Book of Revelation.

The surviving green central stone may be interpreted as the visual focus of lux divina—divine light, renovatio—spiritual renewal and salus—salvation. Together with the six surrounding stones, it originally completed a sacred group of seven, transforming the ring into a personal signum fidei that expressed its wearer’s faith and desire for divine protection.

The largely preserved stone settings allow the ring’s original architectural composition to remain clearly legible. With its rare seven-stone arrangement, surviving central inlay and powerful symbolism, this piece represents an exceptionally unusual and highly collectible example of Crusader-era bronze jewellery.
