Their slightly different sizes, forms and decorative arrangements create an attractive complementary pair. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The bamboo stems, leaves and delicate branches stand out elegantly against the deep, glossy black lacquer. On the larger natsume, small pieces of gold leaf are also scattered across parts of the bamboo leaves, adding subtle texture and variation that can be difficult to capture clearly in photographs. The interiors are finished in black lacquer, with gold-coloured rims. Bamboo is an auspicious motif in Japanese art, symbolising resilience, flexibility, integrity and steady growth. As bamboo remains green throughout the year and bends without easily breaking, it is also associated with longevity and strength in the face of adversity. Both are in good to very good vintage condition with wear, light scuffs and minor blemishes.
