Item Description Takaoka Copperware Bronze Vase with Gold and Silver Crane Inlay and Chrysanthemum Crest A striking bronze vase from Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器), Japan's premier bronze-casting tradition based in Toyama Prefecture. The body is finished in a rich, shaded blue-green patina, over which two cranes are rendered in fine gold and silver inlay (zōgan, 象嵌) — one in gold, one in silver — captured mid-flight. A small gold chrysanthemum-motif medallion (kikumon, 菊紋) is set near the neck of the vase. In Japanese tradition, cranes are believed to mate for life and are a symbol of marital harmony, while the phrase "a crane lives a thousand years" (tsuru wa sen-nen) makes them an emblem of longevity — themes that lend the piece both visual elegance and auspicious meaning. Takaoka Copperware carries over 400 years of craft history and was among the first crafts designated a National Traditional Craft of Japan in 1975, reflecting the region's continued dominance in Japanese bronze production. The weight and density of the piece attest to solid cast-bronze construction and fine finishing. Size Height: 24 cm Diameter: 11 cm Weight 886 g Artist Profile Takaoka Copperware (Takaoka, Toyama, Japan) Takaoka Copperware has a craft history spanning over 400 years and was designated one of Japan's first National Traditional Crafts in 1975.
