Art Nouveau Crystal and Silver Sugar Bowl / Basket, circa 1900
A charming European Art Nouveau / Jugendstil table piece dating from around 1900, in the form of a small crystal glass sugar bowl or basket. The clear moulded glass body is distinguished by an expressive, organic relief of flowing flame- or wave-like forms, creating a striking interplay of light, transparency and movement.
The rounded vessel is mounted with a silver rim and an elegant articulated swing handle. The contrast between the luminous, sculptural glass and the naturally patinated silver gives the piece a particularly refined and atmospheric character.
The flowing relief and organic ornament are strongly evocative of the Art Nouveau fascination with natural forms, movement and asymmetry. More than a piece of functional tableware, it has the quality of a small decorative sculpture designed to catch and transform light.
The silver mounts bear small hallmarks, including a distinctive four-leaf clover maker’s mark attributed to Alexander Sturm of Vienna, together with an Austrian hexagonal cartouche assay mark, suggesting a Viennese origin.
Condition: Good antique condition, with minor age-related marks and natural tarnishing/patina to the silver. The glass appears intact and retains its original moulded relief.
