Item Description

An eye-catching antique Japanese incense burner (kōro) in patinated cast bronze, produced in the Takaoka dōki tradition using the lost-wax (rō-gata) casting method, and signed by the metal caster Yoneda Hideyasu (米田秀保). The hexagonal body stands on three boldly modeled elephant-head feet, their trunks curling into scrolling volutes, and is decorated overall with archaic scrollwork enclosing confronting phoenix (hōō) medallions within shield-shaped cartouches. Twin dragon-form handles rise from the shoulders, their long sinuous necks terminating in horned dragon heads that curve gracefully outward. The pierced hexagonal lid, worked with a dense key-fret (raimon) diaper pattern and cut with cloverleaf-shaped vents, is crowned by a spirited qilin (kirin) finial, cast mid-stride with a flame-like mane and curling tail — a dynamic sculptural highlight to the piece. The underside of the body bears a rectangular seal mark. The bronze has been finished in a warm chocolate-brown patina, with a reddish undertone showing through at the raised details, giving the piece a rich, aged character typical of good-quality Takaoka work.

Pieces bearing this signature appear periodically at auction in Japan, typically censers and vessels combining kirin, dragon and elephant motifs in the lost-wax technique characteristic of fine Takaoka work.
