Utrecht – Silver Rider / Ducaton 1791

This lot features an impressive Silver Rider, also known as a Ducaton or Cavalier d’argent, struck in 1791 at the Utrecht mint for the Province of Utrecht. These heavy silver coins were the highest silver denomination of the Dutch Republic and were highly esteemed in international trade.

Obverse: Depicts an armoured knight with a raised sword on a horse galloping to the right. In the foreground is the crowned provincial shield of Utrecht. The legend reads: MO. NO. ARG. PRO. CON - FOE. BELG. TRAI.

Reverse: Features the crowned Generality arms (the arms of the States-General featuring a rampant lion), supported by two crowned rampant lions. The date 1791 is positioned at the bottom within an ornate cartouche. The legend displays the motto of the Republic: CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT (Unity makes small things grow). At the top is the mintmark: the city arms of Utrecht.
