Extreem Rare Medieval Champleve Pendant 1200-1400 AD
Champlevé enamel from Limoges, or Limoges work (opus lemovicense), is a metal enamel technique that originated in France in the mid-12th century. This technique, known in medieval Europe for its religious objects, involves carving out copper plates into which enamel powder is poured before firing. The champlevé technique: Carving: The artist carves cavities into a copper plate. Filling: The cavities are filled with colored enamel powder. Firing: The entire workpiece is heated to melt the enamel and bond it to the metal. History and success: Golden Age: From the 12th to the 14th century, Limoges became the great master of this art. Objects: Workshops produced relics, crucifixes, incense burners, and bowls. Distribution: These objects traveled throughout the West to meet the needs of churches.
