A refined two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with an unusual composition centred around a circular mirror, set against a softly speckled gold leaf ground. The mirror is incorporated into the left panel, with several young pine trees 松 (matsu) growing beneath it. A pair of stylised chidori 千鳥 (plovers) in flight is rendered in gold across the composition. The sparse decoration is set against a warm mulberry paper ground, with fine gold leaf speckles becoming denser towards the upper and lower edges. Executed in colour, ink and gold leaf on mulberry paper. The panels are set within a red lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware. Period: Japan - Shôwa period (1926-1989).
