折叠屏风(屏风,byôbu) - 纸、漆、木、丝绸 - 日本 - Taishō period (1912-1926)

An imposing, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) composed of six individual kakejiku 掛け軸 (hanging scrolls), each featuring two large calligraphic kanji characters. Reading: “Scattered clouds, from where do they come? Beyond the sunlight, a flute echoes from the Plum Pavilion through the bitter cold.” 散雲從何問 陽外管梅樓 極寒 The twelve characters are executed in bold black ink (sumi) with vigorous, expressive brushwork. Several red seals accompany the inscriptions. Executed in ink on mulberry paper, each individual calligraphy is mounted on a shimmering gold leaf ground and bordered by two patterned silk bands. Encased within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective gilt metal hardware. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926). Dimensions: Total width 377.2 cm (2 × 64.2 cm and 4 × 62.2 cm); Height 171 cm. In very good restored condition with signs of age and use, including repapering of reverse, and restrengthening of hinges. The first panel on the left has undergone restoration. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall as a decorative work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
