ITEM: Complete Japanese Armor (Gusoku) — Mid-Edo Period Certified: Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō · Nihon Katchū Bugu Kenkyū Hozon Kai · No. 223 (2024) An imposing samurai armor (gusoku) of the mid-Edo period (18th century), commanding in presence and superb for display, built around a lacquered-iron cuirass certified by Japan's leading armor authority. The cuirass (dō). The heart of the piece is an okegawa nimai-dō of black-lacquered iron: a two-part hinged body formed of riveted horizontal iron lames, finished smooth in deep, glossy black lacquer. It is laced in fine, close-set kebiki cord in navy blue, shading to light green-yellow (moegi) across the waist — the refined aesthetic device known as koshitori. The upper breastplate and shoulder straps are faced in stencilled decorative leather (egawa), and the back bears the characteristic agemaki bow. It is this cuirass that the Nihon Katchū Bugu Kenkyū Hozon Kai (The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor) has certified at the grade of Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō (certificate No. 223, June 2024, signed by chairman Nagata Hitoshi). Helmet and face. The ensemble is crowned by a russet-iron kabuto with a peaked bowl and a flared neck-guard (shikoro) of lacquered lames, mounted with a crescent-moon front crest (maedate) and a great pair of black-lacquered buffalo-horn side crests (ōsuigyū wakidate) that give it a striking silhouette. It is completed by an iron face mask (menpō) with a detachable nose and a throat-guard (yodarekake) of lacquered lames and matching lacing. Skirt, shoulders and arms. From the cuirass hang the kusazuri (laced lame skirts protecting the thighs), while broad sode (laminated shoulder guards) sit at the shoulders. The arms are defended by mail-and-plate sleeves (kote) finished with fur cuffs, and natural fur trims the lower edges, lending that prized campaign-worn character. Palette and character. Russet iron at the helmet and mask, black lacquer on the cuirass and horns, and lacing that runs from navy blue to green-yellow: a scheme that is restrained above and vivid at the body, with a distinctly martial air. A complete, fully mounted and display-ready armor of strong visual impact, backed by official certification from the foremost authority in Japanese armor. Period: Mid-Edo (18th century) Certification: Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō — NKBKHK, No. 223 (2024) Type: 鉄黒漆塗 桶側胴 腰取 二枚胴 具足 (iron, black-lacquered okegawa nimai-dō koshitori gusoku) Composition note (per certificate): the cuirass is period (mid-Edo). The helmet is associated to the ensemble, and the side crests (wakidate) and shoulder guards (sode) are of later manufacture. A samurai armor that will be the central focus of any room where it is placed and that will delight any fan of Japanese art. This exclusive piece is making it an incredible opportunity for any collector of Japanese, war or simply historical art to get their hands on a piece that will attract attention wherever it is displayed, from offices, to private homes, offices or restaurants and will give a regal look to any place. The armour has gilded details that show the quality of the piece. The incredible workmanship accentuates such ornate pieces as the kabuto, the mempo and the Do. The stand to assemble it and the box are included. This armour is sure to delight any collector of Asian art and will be the focal point of any visitor's home, shop or office. There is a very ancient object and there are damaged by time and tears. There is a possibility that parts may have been added later or that restoration occurred. Due to the delicacy of continuous assembly and disassembly, returns are not allowed on old armor.
