Collection of 3 small but important, Moche copper standing warriors or guardian figures in profile, (mask, body, arms, legs), from the North Coast of Peru. These smaller figures composed of individual relief parts, including legs, arms, mask, and chest plaques.
Hand-carved, hammered, and modeled from a copper alloy. It depicts a figure constructed from several separate parts. The arms, legs, and chest of the guardian figure are curved in a beautifully stylized, angular manner. This ensemble covered a sarcophagus of reed and leather for an elite individual. The small holes on the edges were used to sew the figure to the sarcophagus. This work is among the rare examples known to date that are in a remarkable state of preservation, without restoration or reworking.
Moche copper burial artifacts like these were laid over / incorporated into mummy bundles of the face of important members of the Moche society.
