23. ACCA AU-50, Japan Meiji Year 3 Rising Sun Dragon 20 Sen, clear dragon scales
The 20 sen silver coin of Japan was first minted in Meiji Year 3 (1870), continued until Meiji Year 44 (1911), and was withdrawn from circulation in Showa Year 28 (1953). In Meiji Year 1 (1868), Japan decided to mint new currency following European and American standards, changing the currency units from the old ryō and mon to yen, sen, and rin. However, until Meiji Year 2 (1869), coins issued were still in the old style. In Meiji Year 4 (1871), Japan officially determined the design of the new currency. The earliest 20 sen coin was the Rising Sun Dragon 20 sen silver coin, with the coin's date marked as either "Meiji Year 3" or "Meiji Year 4," although both were issued in Meiji Year 4 (1871). The design on this coin is the same as that of the 1 yen coin. It is an exquisitely designed silver coin, and this particular coin has beautifully intact dragon scales, making it a must-have for collectors who love it.
