No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner.

Background Information:
This solid iron cannon ball, measuring approximately 32 mm in diameter, is attributed to the 17th–18th century. Small-calibre iron projectiles of this general type were used with relatively light artillery pieces, although without a documented find context or associated firearm, the precise weapon for which this example was intended cannot be established.

Cast-iron round shot became an important form of artillery ammunition in Early Modern Europe. Projectiles were cast to correspond with the bore of a particular gun and were used by military forces both on land and aboard ships. Smaller artillery pieces offered greater mobility and could fulfil various defensive and offensive roles.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, artillery played an increasingly important role in European warfare, including the numerous conflicts involving the Dutch Republic. The manufacture of cannon and ammunition formed part of an organised military supply system requiring specialised foundries and large quantities of iron.

With its compact spherical form and naturally aged iron surface, this cannon ball provides a tangible connection to the development and use of gunpowder artillery in Early Modern Europe.
