This lot features a historically significant silver florin of 28 Stuivers (Achtentwintig), minted in 1685 in the Imperial City of Kampen. This specific specimen is highly sought after by collectors due to the presence of the official Holland countermark HOL.

This countermark was applied during the major currency reform of May 1693. Because of an influx of debased florins circulating within the Republic, the States of Holland mandated that only verified coins bearing the HOL stamp could continue to circulate at their full face value of 28 Stuivers. The mark served as a guarantee of the coin's silver purity and weight.

Obverse: Features the crowned city coat of arms of Kampen (the triple-towered gate), surrounded by leaf ornaments. The date 1685 is placed between the fleurons of the crown. Legend: FLOR ARG CIV 28 IMP CAMPEN. The HOL countermark is clearly struck on the obverse.
Reverse: Displays a crowned double-headed eagle with an imperial orb on its chest containing the value 28. Legend: MATTH I D G ROM IMP SEM AVG.
