Please examine all photographs carefully. ──────── An elegant Wajima-nuri wooden vase by lacquer artist Etsurō Hamataka, featuring a vividly rendered camellia and graceful flowing decoration. The tall, angular form is finished in deep, lustrous black urushi lacquer. Sweeping gold and coloured lines flow dynamically across the surface, drawing the eye toward the richly decorated camellia. The flower is rendered in warm shades of red and orange, with gold powder incorporated into the petals and leaves. These details shimmer beautifully as the light and viewing angle change, creating depth and movement against the glossy black ground. Both the vase and its original wooden tomobako bear the artist’s signature. The box is inscribed “Wajima-nuri Flower Vase,” while its underside is marked “Urushi coating / Natural wood,” confirming that the work was made from genuine natural wood and finished with traditional lacquer. Etsurō Hamataka was a Wajima lacquer artist who specialized primarily in maki-e decoration. According to biographical information accompanying another of his works, in 1983 he was commissioned to produce a decorated shikishi poem-card box entitled “Umi” (“The Sea”) on the occasion of the National Tree-Planting Festival attended by the Emperor of Japan. He is also reported to have received several distinguished awards. His known works include flower vessels, writing boxes, folding screens, low tables and ceremonial lacquerware.
